Early
Books: Soulfire
Synopsis:
An investigative journalist targeting a glamorous but unscrupulous businessman
finds herself thrown together with him during a hurricane in the
Caribbean.
She
falls for him, but will not abandon her mission to expose the
dramas – and the crimes – in his private life.
Author
Comment:
Seriously embarrassing.
The
only good thing in it is the section about the anti-hero’s
mother, a former opera star with a failed voice, an ageing toyboy
and an alcohol problem.
That
was a fun piece of characterisation.

This
was the point where my career proper began. Much of my early
work was experimental and occasionally disastrous and should
probably never have made it into print. With the last two books
I was going wrong, but by the end of the nineties I was back
on track and had started writing what I wanted, the way I wanted.
